Decorah & the Driftless Mountain Bike Trail Conditions

Decorah sits in the Driftless Area — the corner of the upper Midwest the last glaciers missed — so instead of flattened till you get steep limestone bluffs, spring-fed creeks and real vertical. Van Peenen Park and the trails above Dunning's Spring pack more climbing into a small footprint than anywhere else in Iowa. Thin soil over limestone drains quickly on the ridges while the valley bottoms stay wet, so aspect and elevation matter here more than the map suggests.
